So here we are again with Dr. Dre’s camp scooping up some highly talented artists all at the same time. While parts of me hopes they actually do something while they’re there, the cynic suggests that I’ll be waiting for a Slaughterhouse or Yelawolf album for about as long as I’d waited for albums from Rakim, Truth Hurts, Eve, Busta Rhymes, The Firm, Hittman, King T, Joell Ortiz (see what I did there?), Stat Quo or Raekwon.

When I said 'hip-hop is dead' a few years ago, I felt we'd gotten away from the great wordplay and storytelling," says Nas. "There's a place for the party shit and a place for the gangster shit. I focus on the guys that are always pushing themselves forward."
1. "My Downfall" - Notorious B.I.G., 1997
The lyrics are about how he's acing the shadows of death, despite all of his success, and he's giving it to you in a way that makes it seem so real.
2. "If My Homie Calls" - 2pac, 1991
He's just saying to his boys that he's going to be a friend no matter how big he gets.
3. "Road To The Riches" - Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo, 1989
The way we're rhyming now? He was already doing it then .
4. "A Bird In The Hand" - Ice Cube, 1991
5. "Paid In Full" - Eric B. & Rakim, 1987
6. "I'm Single" - Lil Wayne, 2010
I'm recently divorced, so I feel what he's saying.
7. "Tears of Joy" - Rick Ross, 2010
Ross is at the pulpit here.
8 "The Moment I Feared" - Slick Rick, 1988
It's cinematic. He's at a hip-hop show and ices this girl who played him, then he's in prison getting violated by some dude. This was unheard of.
9. "Empire State of Mind" - Jay-Z, 2009
This song is huge. It sounds like Broadway. It's New York's modern anthem.
10. "Queen Bitch" - Lil' Kim, 1996
At the time, females rappers didn't appeal to the street, but Kim came with the vulgarity, sexuality and gangster shit.
The EP was recorded live on stage during their September 26th performance, and features 30 minutes of Live J.Period remixes while Black Thought eats up every beat that J puts on. Thought rhymes over beats from Foxy Brown, Damian Marley, dead prez, Jay-Z, Snoop, Biggie, Drake, and more. “Put him over any beat, I don’t care what beat […] he can hold his own,” says J. Period of Black Thought. And the respect is mutual, “I came to do this just on the strength of J. Period saying ‘I’m trying to do this joint.’ […] I appreciate J. Period’s hustle. He’s dedicated and he goes in. Once he has a vision, he’s gonna see it through to fruition.”

After months, if not years of Internet speculation and rumor, the man many call The God MC’s management and label officially confirm that Rakim Allah will release his long awaited new album The Seventh Seal on November 17, 2009. Guest artists include Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss, Maino, Tracey Horton, IQ, Styles P, and others, including Destiny Griffin, Rakim’s own daughter. The artist’s Ra Records shares the imprint in a joint venture with Tuscan Villa and SMC Recordings and is distributed through Fontana/Universal Music Group.
Since its release, the album’s lead single “Holy Are You” has won praise from critics and fans alike. USA Today states, “The God MC previews his long-awaited The Seventh Seal with a lyrically adept reminder of how he earned the name,” with Billboard proclaiming “Rakim is in top form, richly merging self-mythologizing reflections on his legacy with religious imagery.”
His first full album of new material in almost a decade, The Seventh Seal is Rakim’s contemporary observation of the Hip-Hop culture he helped define. While staying loyal to his New York roots, Rakim has created a body of work that encompasses the very best of regional, underground and mainstream styles that are reformed and delivered through his intricate lyricism and the seemingly effortless flow for which he is revered. He has enlisted a slew of production talent including Needlz, Nottz, Jake One, Nick Wiz, Ty Fiffe and more on the album’s well-rounded tracks.
The artist states, “The Seventh Seal is my own revelation…my way of taking the best of what Hip-Hop has to offer, what we as a culture and a community have to offer, putting my stamp on it and leading us forward while constantly respecting what we’ve already accomplished. When you’ve been blessed with a career like mine, you develop a deep relationship with the music, and that love is recognized by the true heads that share it with you. You’ll see us keep building as we break through each Seal…showing the best of what I can do in many forms, bringing the energy and having fun, but first I’m laying that foundation and give my longtime fans the conscious fire they expect.”
